TROY, Alabama – Wesley Person and Jordon Varnado combined for 54 points as the Troy men's basketball team defeated Reinhardt, 97-82, on Sunday afternoon at Trojan Arena.
Person led the Trojans with 28 points, shooting 10-of-13 from the floor, while Varnado ended the day with his second straight double-double, and his second straight 20-point game, with 26 points and 10 boards. Kelton Ford also tallied double figures as he went 4-of-4 from the field on his way to 11 points.
In the opening seven minutes of the second half, Troy (2-0) jumped out to a 71-50 lead with 13:14 remaining in thanks to a 24-6 run, which included 10 of Person's 21 second-half points. The Eagles could never recover as the Trojans led by a comfortable 13 points, or more, for the rest of the contest.
The Trojans worked their way back from a 10-point deficit to take a 47-42 lead heading into the break. The Trojans, who only led for 3:31 in the first, took their first lead of the contest at 5-4. The Eagles' hot shooting enabled them to take a 21-11 lead to open the game. However, the Trojans' 13-5 run to close out the first gave them a 47-42 lead at the half.
In the game, Troy shot 55.9 percent (38-of-68), while Person and Varnado shot a combined 72.4 percent (21-of-29) on the day. The Trojans struggled from deep as they shot 20 percent (3-of-15), thanks to Person's three treys.
Troy scored 64 points in the paint, playing a majority of the game without starting forward and lone senior, John Walton III. The Trojans capitalized on 17 Eagles turnovers, scoring 24 points.
Junior transfer Daniel Peace added seven points, while adding three steals and dishing outa team-high five assists.
The 97 points are the most scored under third-year head coach Phil Cunningham.
