Troy Adds Three High School Standouts in Early Signing Period
11/11/2015 12:55:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Alabama – Head coach Chanda Rigby and the Troy women's basketball program announced the signing of three high school standouts on Wednesday as the NCAA early signing period began.
The Trojans have added Jessie Day from Niceville, Fla., Makayla Robinson from Clyo, Ga., and Harriet Winchester from Safford, Ala. The three will all join the Trojans in 2016-17 as true freshmen.
Day, a 6-foot-1 forward from Niceville High School, averaged 18.8 points per game last season as a junior at Niceville and helped her team to the FHSAA Class 7A Elite Eight for the first time in school history. She was selected to the NWF Daily News All-Area team as a sophomore and junior and was also a third team all-state selection in each of those two seasons. She is the younger sister of current Troy junior Lauren Day.
"Jessie will add a lot to our program," Rigby said. "She brings so much energy, as well as versatility to the game. We hope to rotate her from playing on the perimeter to the post. Her length and her skill set will cause match up problems for many of our opponents."
Robinson, a 5-foot-7 guard from Effingham County High School, was an All-Greater Savannah First Team selection by the Savannah Morning News last season. She averaged 15.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.8 steals per game and was also an All-Region 3-AAAAA as she led her team to a second place finish in the region.
"Makayla is a quick, athletic guard who can really score," Rigby said. "She is smooth in transition and she is a perfect fit for Trojan basketball."
Winchester, a 5-foot-8 guard from Keith High School, led her team to the AHSAA Class 1A State Championship last season and was MVP of the state championship game. She was a finalist for ASWA Class 1A Player of the Year, an award that was won by current Troy freshman Amahni Upshaw. Winchester averaged 18.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game last season and was also an ASWA Class 1A All-State First Team selection.
"Harriet is an amazing athlete," Rigby said. "She is a special player with special abilities, and we are thrilled that she has chosen to stay near her home and play at Troy."
The three will join a Troy roster in 2016-17 that is slated to lose just two players in current seniors Ashley Beverly Kelley and Rachel Reid.
The current Trojans begin their regular season on Friday when they host West Alabama at Trojan Arena at 12 p.m. Admission to the game is free.
