Troy Cruises to Sweep of ULM, Wins Fourth Straight
10/9/2015 8:22:00 PM | Volleyball
TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team took just over an hour to pick up its fourth straight win, sweeping ULM at Trojan Arena, 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-21), on Friday night.
Troy (9-11, 3-4) will need the extra rest with another match coming up in less than 24 hours when UL Lafayette visits Trojan Arena at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
On Friday night against ULM (11-9, 2-4), the Trojans held the Warhawks to an .051 attack percentage and just 24 kills. Troy, on the other hand, hit .263 in the match and posted 40 kills, including 15 each in the second and third sets.
"I thought we played pretty well tonight," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "I would like to think we had something with do with some of their errors. I know on our errors, they definitely had something to do with. It all comes down to getting a good quality first touch, then staying in system and our offense can run pretty well."
Sara Landis led a balanced Troy attack with nine kills. Darby Griff posted eight and hit .400 with just two errors on 15 attempts. Reina Terry recorded six kills and hit .600 from her setter position.
Terry also posted a double-double with 30 assists and 14 digs. Her dig total was tops in the match, while Ali Dowdall recorded 12 for the Trojans.
The sweep was a welcomed sight for the Trojans, especially after the last three matches between Troy and ULM have all gone to five sets with the Warhawks winning all three.
Troy scored seven straight points to take control of the first set, turning an 11-9 lead into an 18-9 advantage. The Trojans hit just .088 in the first set, but held on to win 25-17.
Troy had just two errors in the second set and took control early with a 10-4 lead. The Trojans hit .464 in the set and never let the Warhawks get closer than six points, winning 25-14.
The third set was the closest of the match on the scoreboard with three ties, but the latest was at 4-4, and from there the Trojans scored four straight. ULM got within three at 22-19, but Troy held on to win 25-21.
The Trojans now turn their attention to UL Lafayette, who lost in four sets at South Alabama on Friday night. The Trojans and Ragin' Cajuns will get underway at 6 p.m. Admission to all home Troy volleyball matches is free.
