TROY, Alabama – Troy junior Fátima Fernández Cano was name the Sun Belt Conference Women's Golfer of the Month for the third time in her career, the league office announced Wednesday.
Cano opened her season with a 72.0 stroke average over five rounds and captured her third career individual championship as she defended her title at the Chris Banister Golf Classic. The Santiago de Compostela, Spain, native played two of her five rounds under par for the month.
At the Chris Banister, Cano shot a 1-over 217 on a course that the rest of the field played to a tune of 8.65 over par per round. She went low in two of the three rounds and her 2-under 70 in the final round was the lowest round shot in the tournament.
In the opening tournament of the fall, Cano led the Trojans against a loaded field at the Schooner Fall Classic, where seven of the 12 teams participated in the NCAA Regionals a year ago. The event was shortened to two rounds due to rain and Cano finished tied for 19th place with a 1-over 143.
Cano's career has been filled with accomplishments through its first two years. She has twice been named to the All-Sun Belt First Team in addition to earning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year honors. Last season, Cano was named the Golfweek National Player of the Week after she set the Troy record with a 6-under 210 at the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate.
Cano and the Trojans are back in action Oct. 19-20 at the Blue Raider Invitational in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
