Troy Cruises In Fifth Set Past South Alabama
10/6/2015 9:38:00 PM | Volleyball
TROY, Alabama – South Alabama forced a fifth set, but the Troy volleyball team responded well and dominated the final set against its conference rival in a 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 25-18, 21-25, 15-8) win at Trojan Arena on Tuesday night.
Troy (8-11, 2-4) has now won three straight matches, and did so by hitting .400 in the final set with nine kills and just one error. Overall in the match, three Trojans posted double-digit kills, led by 13 from Sara Landis. Darby Griff led the way with a .333 attack percentage thanks to 10 kills and three errors on 21 attempts.
Reina Terry posted a season-high 46 assists to set up a Troy offense that hit .168 overall in the match. The Trojans held South Alabama (8-8, 2-3) to a .116 attack percentage, thanks in large part to a match-high 31 digs from Ali Dowdall.
Three other Trojans also posted double-digit digs including Alisha Hinrichs (15), Karissa Carney (10) and Terry who had a double-double with 14 digs. Griff led the way with five blocks for the Trojans while Landis and Leah Causey each had four blocks.
"It was a fun match to be a part of, and I'm glad we came out on top," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "In the middle of the match you can't think about the rivalry, you've got to just concentrate on making adjustments on the fly, and I thought our team made those adjustments pretty seamlessly."
With the score tied 3-3 in the fifth set, Troy scored four straight points to take a 7-3 lead, just ahead of South Alabama calling a timeout, down 8-4. The Jaguars got within two at 9-7, but Troy rattled off four more in a row and took control ahead of a 15-8 final set win.
Troy started the night slow as South Alabama took a 5-0 lead in the first set. The Trojans went on to hit just .057 in that first set, and South Alabama recorded 5.0 of their 15.0 total team blocks to grab the early one-set lead.
However, from there the Trojans recovered, holding South Alabama to .022 and .000 attack percentages in the second and third sets, winning each one of them easily.
The Jaguars used a big run midway through the fourth set and took the lead away from Troy on their way to forcing the deciding fifth set.
South Alabama got 17 kills from Mechell Daniel, but she only hit .189 with seven errors and match-high 53 attempts. Emily Hundt led the Jaguars with 26 digs while Nikki Gittens recorded nine blocks.
The Trojans return to the court on Friday when they host ULM at Trojan Arena at 6 p.m. Troy also hosts UL Lafayette on Saturday at 6 p.m. Admission to all home Troy volleyball matches is free.
