Troy Notebook - South Alabama Game
10/3/2015 10:57:00 PM | Football
• In the third quarter South Alabama quarterback Cody Clements found receiver Josh Magee twice down field on the right side, gains of 48 and 44 yards. Both Clements and Magee were on UAB's team last season and transferred. Troy's LaMarcus Farmer was in coverage both times, and he also played for UAB.
Magee's position coach at UAB in 2014 was Cornelius Williams, who is now Troy's receivers coach.
• Troy quarterback Brandon Silvers, a native of Orange Beach, was familiar with many South Alabama coaches and players. He was recruited by the Jaguars and considered attending school there before deciding on Troy. He works out in the offseason with South Alabama running back Terrance Thomas, who had 18 yards on five carries.
Silvers said he also remembered playing against several South Alabama players in high school, most notably linebacker Blake Dees, who attended Spanish Fort High School and was the Jaguars' leading tackler for the night with nine stops.
• Though Silvers wasn't sacked, he was pressured much of the night and completed just 16 of 35 for 146 yards and three interceptions. Silvers hadn't thrown an interception this season, but he threw one on the fourth play of the game. It broke his streak of 192 consecutive passes without one.
Clements was sacked five times, a season-high for Troy, which now has 11 on the season. The five sacks were accounted for statistically by seven different Trojan defenders.
• Running back Brandon Burks was averaging an even five yards per carry on the season coming in, but was held to 3.2 yards per carry on 26 runs by South Alabama.
Burks was stopped twice on 4th and 1, including on Troy's final offensive series of the game.
• Returner/receiver Teddy Ruben has been a weapon on special teams this season. He had a 33-yard punt return and accounted for 163 all-purpose yards – 51 receiving, 39 on punt returns and 73 on kickoff returns.
