Troy Victim of Late Runs in Loss at South Alabama

MOBILE, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team won the first set, but South Alabama used late runs in the next three sets to pick up a 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-21) win at Jaguar Gym on Tuesday night.

Troy (13-13, 6-6) got a match-high 17 kills from Blair Winston, but it wasn't enough as the Trojans hit just .083 as a team and saw South Alabama post 17.0 blocks.

The Trojans held South Alabama to that same .083 percentage in the first set and led wire-to-wire in a 25-21 lead. However, with the score tied at 21-21 in the second set, South Alabama (13-9, 7-4) scored four straight points to tie the match with a 25-21 win.

In the third set, the Jaguars scored six straight to turn a 14-13 lead into a 20-13 lead, and Troy could never get closer than six in a 25-19 loss.

The Jaguars scored four straight in the fourth set to pull ahead, 21-14, but Troy fought back and got within two at 23-21. However, a service error by Troy and South Alabama's 17th block clinched the match for the Jaguars.

With the loss, Troy split its season series with South Alabama for the third straight season.

Ali Dowdall's 21 digs led four Trojans in double figures in that category. In addition to Alisha Hinrichs and Karissa Carney with 11 and 10, respectively, Reina Terry posted a double-double with 11 digs and 36 assists.

Mechell Daniel led South Alabama with 12 kills while Nikki Gittens paced all players with 10 blocks. The win was the third straight for South Alabama who was coming off of victories over Little Rock and Texas State.

Troy returns to the court this weekend with road matches at UT Arlington and Texas State on Friday and Saturday, respectively. After that, the Trojans return home to host Mississippi State on Monday in their final non-conference match.
