Griff Sets Blocks Record, But Troy Has Streak Snapped
10/22/2015 8:31:00 PM | Volleyball
Â
TROY, Alabama – Darby Griff set the Troy career blocks record, but the Troy volleyball team saw its eight-match winning streak snapped in a 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-12) loss to Texas State at Trojan Arena on Thursday night.
Â
Troy (13-12, 6-5) lost for the first time in nearly a month, but saw Griff record two blocks in the first set, bringing her career total to a Troy record 304, breaking Devin Von Pingel's record of 303. It also made Griff the first Trojan in 20 years to post back-to-back 100 block seasons.
Â
"It was a huge goal coming into this season," Griff said. "So it was amazing to be able to break it, especially since the last record holder was one of my previous teammates, Devin. I always looked up to her, and it was a huge goal and a huge accomplishment for me, but I just wish it could've come in a win."
Â
Griff broke the record in an ultra-competitive first set that saw 10 ties and four lead changes, including as late as when Troy turned a 20-19 deficit into a 22-20 lead. The Trojans held Texas State (13-10, 8-2) to a .154 attack percentage in the first set, but the Bobcats went on to hit .367 overall in the match.
Â
Offensively, Sara Landis had a team-high nine kills for Troy, but the Trojans hit just .067 as a team. Reina Terry posted a double-double for the Trojans with 26 assists and 10 digs, both tops for Troy.
Â
"I thought Texas State played really well, and I thought we didn't," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "It's been a long time since we've played like that, and it kind of brought us down to earth a little bit. But really, I can't say enough about the way Texas State played."
Â
The Bobcats hit .516 in the second set with 18 kills and just two errors. Texas State then hit .379 in the third set and .524 in the fourth set. After the first set, the Bobcats had just seven errors.
Â
Jordan Kohl, Kelsey Weynand and Shelby Vas Matt had 13, 12 and 11 kills, respectively, for the Bobcats while all posting three errors.
The Trojans return to the court on Tuesday when they travel to take on South Alabama in the start of a three-game road swing. Troy will then play at UT Arlington and Texas State next Friday and Saturday, respectively.
