Troy Women Fire Low Round; Finish Second at Blue Raider Invitational
10/20/2015 4:37:00 PM | Golf (W)
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Thanks to under-par rounds from Fátima Fernández Cano and Gabi Oubre, the Troy women's golf team shot a 1-over 289 in Tuesday's final round of the Blue Raider Invitational at the Old Fort Golf Club. The Trojans finished second in the field of 17, while Cano tied for second and Oubre tied for 12th place.
Troy's final round card was the best of the tournament and the best of the season for the Trojans. Middle Tennessee, the tournament host, won the team title behind individual medalist Avery George, who held off Cano's late charge. Cano shot a 2-under 70 in the final round, which was eight shots better than George, who escaped with a four-shot win.
Birdies littered Troy's scorecards up and down the lineup led by five each from Cano and Oubre. Becca Horner added four, while Kalyn Hudson had three and Bianca Lohbauer had one. Troy finished second in the field with 33 birdies over the three rounds.
Troy finished 10 shots ahead of third-place Eastern Michigan, in addition to besting Sun Belt Conference foes Little Rock (+21), Arkansas State (+32) and South Alabama (+42).
Cano started her final round with a birdie and reached 3-under par after back-to-back birdies on No. 1 and No. 2 (she started on the fourth hole); she has now played four of her eight rounds this season at or under par.
Oubre shot 17 spots up the leaderboard on the final day as she shot a 1-under 71, which is tied for her best round of the season. After opening with a bogey, she birdied three of her next eight holes to move to 3-under. A rough patch of four holes brought Oubre back to even par, but a birdie on her final hole of the day set her card at 1-under.
Lohbauer continued her round-to-round improvement as she carded a 3-over 75 in the final round; she improved her card each round and finished in a tie for 18th place. Horner also had a huge ascent up the leaderboard as she jumped 21 spots into a tie for 36th after shooting a 1-over 73, while Hudson tied for 49th after carding a 79 on Tuesday.
The Trojans move to 27-11 on the young season with a win and now a second-place finish on their resume through three events. Troy will wrap up its fall schedule at the UAB Fall Beach Back on Nov. 2-3 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
