Troy Volleyball Smothers Georgia State at Home
10/2/2015 8:33:00 PM | Volleyball
TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team dominated Georgia State in front of a loud Trojan Arena crowd, holding the Panthers to a negative attack percentage in a four-set, 3-1 (25-12, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18), win on Friday night.
Troy (7-11, 1-4) won its second straight match to open a six-match homestand, and did so thanks in large part to holding Georgia State to a -.024 attack percentage. Troy held the Panthers under .000 in the three sets won by the Trojans, and hit .186 in the match itself.
"We had a great crowd, and it's always fun to play at home," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "We knew this was a really important match for us tonight. Both teams were looking for their first conference win. The girls got a chance to see that all of their hard work in practice this week took them in the direction we told them it would."
Leah Causey and Sara Landis posted identical offensive numbers to lead the Trojans. Each junior recorded 11 kills and three errors on just 25 attempts for a .320 attack percentage. Reina Terry posted a match-high 35 assists to set up the Troy offense.
Landis recorded a match-high five blocks, leading Troy to 9.0 total team blocks. Ali Dowdall posted a match-high 16 digs to lead the Troy backline.
Troy came out on fire and quickly took a 10-3 lead in the first set. That lead ballooned to 18-6 and the Trojans went on to win, 25-12. Troy hit .346 in the opening set and held Georgia State (4-10, 0-4) to a -.057 mark.
The second set was the closest of the night, featuring seven ties, including as late as 16-16. However, the Panthers scored three straight points at that point and went on to win, 25-22.
The third set was also close, but only early as Troy scored six straight to turn an 11-11 score into a 17-11 lead. The Trojans hit .348 in the third set on their way to a 25-16 win.
Troy carried the momentum into the fourth set, taking an early 5-1 lead, and Georgia State never fully recovered. The Trojans held the Panthers to a match-low -.111 attack percentage with just six kills and went on to win the final set, 25-18.
The Trojans return to the court on Tuesday when they host rival South Alabama at Trojan Arena at 6 p.m. Admission to all Troy volleyball home matches is FREE.
