Troy Wins Sixth Straight in Front of Record Crowd
10/13/2015 9:33:00 PM | Volleyball
Â
TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team won its sixth straight match, and did so in front of a Troy record crowd of 2,021 fans, beating Florida A&M, 3-2 (25-17, 24-26, 22-25, 25-17, 15-10), at Trojan Arena on Tuesday night.
Â
Troy (11-11) ended its season-long six-match homestand with a perfect record and also tied the program's Division I era record with a sixth straight home win.
Â
"The crowd was amazing," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "I think we set a record for attendance and we can't thank our fans enough. It was an amazing atmosphere, and to pull out a win in front of them makes me feel really good about our team."
Â
It wasn't easy however, as Florida A&M (4-15) made the plays it needed to in order to win close sets in the second and third. In those two sets, the Lady Rattlers hit .350 and .265 as a team.
Â
However, Troy held Florida A&M to a -.030 mark in the fourth set and dominated on its way to a 25-17 win. The Trojans then posted an outstanding .500 attack percentage in the fifth set with 11 kills and just one error.
Â
"We wanted to try to get some folks some experience, and unfortunately we didn't put the effort in for us to keep them in there," Kirkpatrick said. "They did a nice job, but unfortunately the team in general didn't play as well as they needed to. Florida A&M played a heck of a match and we really had to fight and claw and figure some things out."
Â
Blair Winston and Symone Shaw combined for seven kills on 11 attempts in the fifth set and led the Trojans to victory. Overall, Winston had nine kills and hit .400 in just three sets of action, while Shaw had 12 kills and hit .407.
Â
Darby Griff led the way with 14 kills, and also recorded eight blocks for the Trojans who had 13.0 as a team. Troy hit .278 overall and held Florida A&M to a .186 percentage.
Â
Ali Dowdall led all players with 23 digs while Alisha Hinrichs posted her first career double-double with 23 assists and 10 digs. Hinrichs was the Trojans' primary setter for the first two sets, then gave way to Reina Terry who finished with 26 assists in the final three sets.
Â
Pamela Soriano led Florida A&M with 17 kills, but also had 10 errors and hit just .152. Valeria Lopez posted a match-high 47 assists for the Lady Rattlers.
Â
The Trojans return to the court and to Sun Belt play this weekend when they travel to take on ULM and UL Lafayette on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Troy just defeated both the Warhawks and Ragin' Cajuns last weekend at home.
