Troy Goes on the Road, Wins Seventh Straight
10/16/2015 9:12:00 PM | Volleyball
Â
MONROE, Louisiana – The Troy volleyball team ran its winning streak to seven matches with a third straight come-from-behind victory, this one on the road against ULM in four sets, 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20), at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Friday night.
Â
Troy (12-11, 5-4) came out cold and lost the first set, but used big scoring runs in each of the next three to get its first true road win of the season. The win puts Troy alone in fourth place in the Sun Belt standings.
Â
"ULM played really well, and we needed to up our game to compete with them," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "I'm really proud of our team for pulling together and staying confident in what we've been doing. Anytime you go on the road and win in the Sun Belt it's huge."
Â
Leah Causey and Sara Landis each had 12 kills to lead the Trojans. Causey posted a .440 attack percentage with just one error on 25 attempts. Reina Terry recorded 36 assists to lead Troy to a .186 attack percentage as a team.
Â
Defensively, Ali Dowdall led the Trojans with 19 digs, while Terry was right behind with 18 digs to record a double-double. Landis and Darby Griff each posted four blocks, leaving Griff just three shy of breaking the Troy Divison I era career record of 303 blocks currently held by Devin Von Pingel.
Â
After posting a match-low .125 attack percentage and losing the first set, Troy was down 18-17 in the second before scoring seven straight to take a 24-18 lead ahead of a 25-20 win.
Â
ULM (11-12, 2-7) was up by one again in the third set, 14-13, when Troy took control with five straight to go ahead 18-14 on the way to another 25-20 win
Â
The Warhawks dominated early in the fourth set, forcing Kirkpatrick to call a timeout down 10-4. However, out of that timeout, the Trojans scored 14 of the next 16 points and went ahead 18-12 before winning a third straight set by a 25-20 score.
Hope Pawlik led ULM on the night with 13 kills. Taylor Zaeske had 12 but hit just .068 as ULM recorded a .118 attack percentage as a team.
Â
Up next for Troy will be a quick turnaround and a trip to UL Lafayette for a 6:30 p.m. match on Saturday. Like with ULM on Friday, Troy will be playing the Ragin' Cajuns for the second time in seven days after a four-set win at Trojan Arena last Saturday.
