Troy Puts Hot Start on the Line at Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball will look to continue its hot start to the season on Tuesday when the Trojans travel to take on Alabama State at Lockhart Gym at 7 p.m.

Troy (7-1) has tied the record for the best start in the program's Division I history, but will have to beat the defending SWAC Champions to break that record. An 8-1 start would mark the first in Troy's Division I history, which began in 1993.

The Trojans have won four straight, including all three at last weekend's Trojan Invitational. Troy defeated Southern Miss on Monday in its home opener before knocking off Mercer, Alabama A&M and Jacksonville State to win the Trojan Invitational.

Blair Winston was named the MVP of the tournament after recording 18 kills in a four-set win over Jacksonville State to win the tournament. Winston leads the Trojans at 3.30 kills/set and is hitting .288 on the season. Marija Zelenovic and Symone Shaw are tied for second on the squad at 2.72 kills/set each.

Tineille Waggoner has been the Trojans primary setter, averaging 9.87 assists/set for a Troy team that is hitting .254 on the season.

Defensively, Troy is second in the Sun Belt with 2.48 blocks/set as a team. Darby Griff is averaging a team-best 1.11 blocks/set while Kiah Cheatham is averaging 1.00 blocks/set. Ali Dowdall is averaging a team-best 3.53 digs/set.

Alabama State (2-5) went 0-3 last weekend at the Arizona Invitational with losses to No. 23 Arizona, Cal State Northridge and Loyola-Chicago. The Lady Hornets won the SWAC a year ago and made the first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.

Troy is 27-0 all-time against Alabama State, including a three-set sweep in Trojan Arena a year ago. Troy has dropped just one set against the Lady Hornets since 1999.
