Troy Set to Host Four-Team Trojan Invitational

TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team will look to continue its hot start as it hosts the Trojan Invitational on Thursday and Friday. Alabama A&M, Jacksonville State and Mercer will all visit Trojan Arena for the six-match tournament.

Troy will take on Mercer at 7 p.m. on Thursday before hosting Alabama A&M at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and Jacksonville State at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Other matches will be played at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, 12 p.m. on Friday and 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Troy (4-1) is coming off of a home-opening sweep of Southern Miss on Monday. Prior to that, the Trojans posted a 3-1 mark at the Big Orange Bash with the lone loss coming in a close match against tournament host Clemson.

Marija Zelenovic and Blair Winston have led the Trojans offensively in the early portion of the season with 3.39 and 3.11 kills/set, respectively. They have led a Troy offense that's hitting .271, the third best mark in the Sun Belt.

Tineille Waggoner and Reina Terry have split time at setter for the Trojans thus far, with Waggoner playing all three sets in Monday's win over Southern Miss. The junior is averaging 9.21 assists/set.

Defensively, the Trojans lead the Sun Belt with 2.64 blocks/set. Kiah Cheatham, the Sun Belt's reigning Defensive Player of the Week, is one of three Trojans averaging over 1.00 blocks/set. Cheatham (1.06), Zelenovic (1.00) and Darby Griff (1.11) are averaging over 1.00 blocks/set.

Mercer (2-1) won the team title at the CofC Invitational during the season's opening weekend. The Bears defeated Kent State and College of Charleston, an NCAA Tournament team a year ago. Mercer's lone loss was to Davidson. Troy is 14-5 all-time against Mercer, including a five-set win a season ago.

Alabama A&M (1-3) is coming off of a mid-week loss at UT Martin and a 1-2 mark at the Southern Miss Invitational last weekend. The Lady Bulldogs lost to Nicholls and Southern Miss before defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff in five sets. Troy is 12-2 all-time against Alabama A&M with 12 straight wins. Alabama A&M's last win over Troy came in 1999.

Jacksonville State (0-4) was winless in last weekend's UAB/Samford Volleyball Challenge. The Gamecocks lost to Georgia State, Samford, Michigan State and Southeastern Louisiana. Troy is 10-13 all-time JSU, but the two sides haven't met since 2009.
