Troy Volleyball Opens Home Schedule with Labor Day Matinee

TROY, Alabama – For the second straight season, the Troy volleyball team will open its home schedule with a Labor Day afternoon match-up in Trojan Arena. This time, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles will visit Troy for a 1 p.m. on Monday.

Troy (3-1) finished second at the Big Orange Bash this weekend, with the lone loss coming in four sets to tournament host and champion Clemson. Troy took the first set from the Tigers, and had a set point in the third, but Clemson used late runs in the second, third and fourth sets to take the match.

The Trojans defeated Austin Peay and UNC Asheville in straight sets on Friday and also knocked off USC Upstate, in five sets, on Saturday.

Preseason All-Sun Belt selection Marija Zelenovic led the Trojans offensively on the weekend as she averaged 3.47 kills/set and hit .279. Zelenovic and Blair Winston landed on the weekend's all-tournament team. Winston averaged 2.93 kills/set and hit .291.

Troy broke in two new setters during their four matches. Junior college transfer Tineille Waggoner averaged 9.18 assists/set in 11 sets while true freshman Reina Terry averaged 7.86 assists/set in seven sets. Waggoner played in both of Friday's matches while Terry closed out the USC Upstate match and played most of the Clemson match.

Defensively, Ali Dowdall stepped in at libero and led the Trojans with 49 digs on the weekend for a 3.27 digs/set average. Kiah Cheatham recorded a team-high 16 blocks and averaged 1.07 blocks/set.

Southern Miss (3-0) went undefeated at its own Southern Miss Invitational with wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Alabama A&M and Nicholls. The Golden Eagles dropped their only set of the weekend to Nicholls.

The Golden Eagles defeated Troy last season and now hold a 4-3 advantage in the all-time series between the two. The two sides have split two previous meetings in Troy, with the last coming in 2001.
