Troy Stumbles in Season Opener at UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Troy's three-game win streak over its in-state rival UAB was snapped Saturday at Legion Field as the Blazers topped the Trojans 48-10 in the season opener for both schools.
The game started out in a positive fashion for the Trojans as Brandon Silvers and Chandler Worthy hooked for a 41-yard completion on the first play of the game and four plays later Jordan Chunn found the end zone for his 15th career rushing touchdown.
However, UAB (1-0) scored on its first four possessions to build a 24-7 lead midway through the second quarter. Cody Clements threw a pair of touchdown passes to Kennard Blackman, Jordan Howard rushed for a score and Ty Long added a 34-yard field goal.
Ryan Kay connected on a 47-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to pull Troy (0-1) within two scores, 24-10.
"We were totally ill-prepared for what we faced and the other team was 100 percent prepared for what they faced and the outcome is one that's not very good for us, Troy people, Troy University," Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. "We've got to make some changes and adjustments and try to be a more physical-minded football team in all three phases. That's as simple as it gets right there."
The Trojans had a pair of prime opportunities to cut into the deficit early in the second half after the defense forced turnovers on the Blazers' first two possessions after intermission. Jacquez Young forced a fumble and Keion Payne recovered it on the first play of the half and Montres Kitchens intercepted Clements on UAB's fourth play of the half. However, the Troy offense was able to pick up just one first down on the possessions following the turnovers.
The Blazers bounced back with scores on their next three drives with a pair of touchdowns and a 49-yard field goal by Long. A late touchdown in the fourth quarter capped the scoring.
In his Troy debut, Silvers went 17-of-24 for 162 yards, while Dontreal Pruitt was 4-of-6 for 39 yards in limited action. Brandon Burks led the Trojans with 42 yards on the ground and with five catches for 23 yards. Worthy finished with a pair of catches for 46 yards; 12 different Troy players had at least one reception.
Clements finished 13-of-19 for 152 yards with an interception and two touchdowns. UAB rushed for 338 yards as a team paced by Jordan Howard's 179 yards on 19 carries and D.J. Vinson's 106 yards on 22 carries.
The Trojans will look to rebound next Saturday when Duke becomes the ACC opponent to visit Veterans Memorial Stadium for Troy's home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in a game broadcast by ESPN3.
