Silvers Enjoys First Career Action
Troy freshman quarterback Brandon Silvers knew he has some big shoes to fill. After all, he is the successor to Corey Robinson, who holds 11 Troy and Sun Belt Conference career records. On Saturday, Silvers saw his first snaps as Troy's starter.
On the first play of his career, Silvers flipped a shovel pass to Chandler Worthy, who raced 41 yards to the UAB 19-yard line. Four plays later, the Trojans were in the end zone.
Â
"It felt great. We knew that was going to be the first play of the game for about a week," Silvers said. "When we lined up and saw how the defense was set up, I knew it was going to be a big play."
Â
Silvers finished the game 16-for-23 for 153 yards.
Â
Chunn: Scoring is kind of his thing
In 2013, Jordan Chunn set a Troy single-season record for a freshman with 14 rushing touchdowns. He got off to a fast start on adding to his touchdown total as he found the end zone on the fifth play of the game, a 1-yard plunge.
Â
With the score, the 15th of his career, Chunn moved into a tie with LaBarron Black, Willie Tullis and Jimmy Godwin for 12th all-time in career rushing touchdowns.
Â
Heat? What heat?
Leading into Saturday's game, there was concern over the possibility of temperature reaching well into the 90s. Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said earlier in the week that it could become an issue, especially early in the season.
Â
Game time temperature was recorded at 91 but wavered as rain showers scattered the Birmingham area but never impacted the game. Players played off the heat's impact after the game, saying that it wasn't a factor.
Â
Kay's redemption
Sophomore kicker Ryan Kay missed his first career field goal attempt, a 29-yard attempt with 3:07 remaining in the second quarter. But, it didn't take long for him to redeem himself. As first half time expired, Kay drilled a 47-yard field goal to narrow Troy's deficit to 24-10.
Â
Kay recorded three punts and a kickoff last season.
