Troy Volleyball Releases 2014 Schedule

TROY, Ala. – The Troy volleyball program and head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick announced the Trojans' 2014 schedule on Friday. The schedule features 14 home matches, including a two-day tournament at Trojan Arena.

"I'm really excited about our schedule especially with the renewing of the Troy Invitational," Kirkpatrick said. "We play some really good schools this season and we're looking forward to competing against them."

After opening the season with four matches at the Big Orange Bash hosted by Clemson, the Trojans will open their home schedule with a Labor Day matinee for the second straight season. This season, it is Southern Miss that will visit Trojan Arena for a 1 p.m. match on September 1.

Just three days later, Troy will host the Trojan invitational as Alabama A&M, Jacksonville State and Mercer visit Trojan Arena for six total matches. The Trojans will open their portion of the tournament against Mercer on Thursday, September 4, at 7 p.m. Troy will host Alabama A&M at 12 p.m. and Jacksonville State at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 5, to complete the tournament.

The following week, Troy will travel to Alabama State to face the defending SWAC champions, before traveling to Auburn for three matches at the Active Ankle Challenge.

Troy opens a 20-match Sun Belt schedule at Trojan Arena on Wednesday, September 17, as new conference foe Georgia Southern visits. The Eagles went 28-6 a season ago and played in the NCAA Tournament, however, one of those losses came in the first volleyball match played at Trojan Arena as Troy swept Georgia Southern on Labor Day.

The Sun Belt schedule features a double-round-robin format, meaning every team in the league will visit Trojan Arena with Troy travel to every team as well. In addition to Georgia Southern, the conference also features another newcomer in Appalachian State.

The season will conclude when the conference's top eight teams travel to Texas State for the 2014 Sun Belt Volleyball Championships beginning on Thursday, November 27.

Gone from the league is WKU, which won the 2013 regular season title. However, the Lady Toppers were denied the tournament title as Troy upset WKU in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Championships inside Trojan Arena.

The win over WKU highlighted a 13-21 (7-11) campaign for the Trojan that concluded with a semifinal loss to UT Arlington in five sets. The semifinal appearance was the second straight for the Trojans who hadn't advanced that far in their first seven seasons as a Sun Belt member.

In 2014, Kirkpatrick's ninth Troy squad will feature five returning starters but will have to replace last season's starting setter and libero. In all, the Trojans return 11 letter winners from last year's team and lose just three. Five newcomers, including four true freshman will join the Trojans for the 2014 season.
