Trojans Close Regular Season With Split at No. 21 South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy softball team (22-29-2, 5-13 SBC) split its two games at No. 21 South Alabama (38-11, 15-6 SBC) on Saturday. The Trojans used dominant pitching to take game one, 1-0, but fell in game two, 3-2.

Ashley Rainey was stellar in game one, allowing just two hits and earning the win. South Alabama had entered the game 15-1 at home this season.

The Trojans earn the seventh seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Championships and will take on ULM in the opening game on Wednesday.

The Trojans now return home before heading out to Lafayette, La., for the Sun Belt Conference Championships, beginning on Wednesday morning. Check back with TroyTrojans.com on Sunday night for the complete bracket and schedule.

Troy 1, South Alabama 0 (Game 1)

Rainey was dominant in game one, allowing two hits over seven innings. Rainey started off the game by retiring 12 consecutive batters and did not allow a hit until the sixth inning.

Troy got the lone run of the game in the fifth. Rainey led off the inning with a single up the middle and was pinch-run for by Bria Epps. Epps then took second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Heather Johnston. Epps then came home with Taylor Smartt reaching on an error.

The Jaguars threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out, but the Trojans pulled through. Becca Hartley showed off the leather, making several ranging catches in game one.

The Trojans picked up five hits in game one. Meg Willis had a double and a single, while Rainey, Michelle Phelps and Kacie McAllister each had singles.

Troy 2, South Alabama 3 (Game 2)

Jaycee Affeldt struggled in the start, allowing two runs on five hits in 2.1 innings. Sara Mock took over from there, allowing four hits and one run in 3.2 innings of work.

South Alabama got on the board in the first. Troy had gone the previous 22 innings without allowing a run. The Jaguars plated one more in the third.Â

The Trojans leveled the score in the top of the fourth inning on back-to-back home runs by Erica Davis and Willis.
Â
The Jaguars reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the inning and held on to take the game 3-2.
