DESTIN, Fla. – A pair of Troy University student-athletes earned top awards at the Sun Belt Conference Honors Banquet on Tuesday night. Troy volleyball's Courtney Cohen was named the Female Postgraduate Scholar Athlete of the Year. Troy women's golfer Langley Vannoy was named to the Sun Belt Conference Leadership Team.
Cohen, who graduated earlier in May with a degree in biomedical sciences, received a check for $4,500 that will go towards her future education. Cohen, a native of Woodstock, Ga., is enrolling in the Mercer University Physician Assistant Program.
A Capital One Academic All-American in 2013, Cohen graduated with a 3.96 cumulative GPA and summa cum laude honors. She was a three-time member of the Capital One Academic All-District first team in addition to being named the first academic All-American in Troy volleyball history.
Cohen finished her playing career in the semifinals of last year's Sun Belt Championships after an upset of No. 1 seed WKU in quarterfinals at Trojan Arena.
A four-year starting libero, Cohen recorded 2,077 career digs and a 4.38 digs/set average, both Troy all-time records. Cohen is one of just six players in Sun Belt history to record 2,000 career digs and won Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week honors four times in her career, tying the Troy record for weekly conference awards.
In Cohen's four-year career, the Trojans advanced to the Sun Belt Championships three times, including two semifinal appearances. In the program's five Sun Belt seasons prior, the Trojans advanced to one tournament and lost their only match.
Vannoy, a rising senior from Pensacola, Fla., helped lead the Troy women's golf team to Sun Belt Conference Championship and a berth in the NCAA East Regional this spring. Troy's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President for the 2014-15 academic year, Vannoy is also a standout in the classroom as she carries a 3.8 grade-point-average in health education.
A three-time WGCA All-America Scholar Golf Team honoree, Vannoy ranks third all-time in Troy history with a 77.50 career stroke average. She is tied for the second-lowest round in school history after carding a 69 at the Fred Marx Invitational in the fall.
Each Sun Belt institution nominates a student-athlete for the Sun Belt Conference Leadership Team. The award is given to a letter-winning student-athlete, based on leadership, sportsmanship, community service, citizenship, academic excellence and any other qualities valued by the institution.
