TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Sun Belt Conference champion Troy women's golf team wrapped up play at the NCAA Women's Golf East Regional at the SouthWood Golf Course on Saturday. The No. 21 seed Trojans shot a 303 in the final round and finished in 20th place.
The NCAA Regional appearance was the first in Troy's Division I women's golf history and the Trojans gained valuable experience from the trip.
"Really proud of the way they fought and hung in there all week long," head coach Bart Barnes said. "We played really hard with a lot of effort, a lot of heart and a lot of pride. We'd love to be making this trip again next year having learned what we learned this week. We're just trying to get better each year and maybe we're on the different end of the stick next year."
Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Fátima Fernández Cano shot a 3-over 75 in her final round of a sensational rookie campaign. Cano finished tied for 41st place in the NCAA East Regional as she finished 5-over for the tournament; she finished in the top 10 in five of her 11 events this season.
The Trojans were pared with No. 31 Kentucky and Seton Hall during the final round of play and played within four shots of the Wildcats in the round and nine shots over the course of three rounds.
