TROY, Ala. – Team Pike County Special Olympics held their annual local games on Monday at Troy University, with many Troy student-athletes volunteering their time to help make the event successful.
The games began with an opening ceremony at Sartain Hall on Monday morning, with Troy Athletics Director John Hartwell declaring the games open. In addition to the Troy athletics staff attending the opening ceremony, Troy student-athletes volunteered at the ceremony and at various events around Sartain Hall throughout the day.
The event allows athletes from Team Pike County to qualify for the Special Olympics Alabama State Games, which will be held at Troy University and throughout Troy from May 18-20.
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
