Women’s Golf Finishes Sixth at Kiawah Island Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Paced by a pair of top-10 finishes from Brooke Spinks and Taylor McGraw, the Troy women's golf team finished in a tie for sixth place at the 36-team Kiawah Island Classic. The three-day tournament at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort concluded Tuesday.
Spinks tied her career-best with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday in a round that featured five birdies. Spinks shot 1-over in the opening round and was 8-over in Monday's second round as wind conditions reached the 20 mile-per-hour mark. She finished 2-under on the par-5 holes in the tournament, which was the fourth best in the field, while her 10 birdies was tied for the second most.
McGraw, who tied for eighth place with Spinks, finished 6-over on Tuesday after rounds of 69 and 77 on the first two days of the tournament. She finished with seven birdies over the three rounds and now has a seventh place and eight place finish in the first two events of the spring.
No. 37 Kent State won the team title by 14 strokes over Penn State, followed by High Point, Chattanooga, Jacksonville State, Troy and Arkansas State. Katia Joo from Boston College and Wad Phaewchimplee from Kent State tied for individual medalist honors at 4-over for the tournament, Spinks and McGraw were just four shots back.
Sydney Conrad shot 7-over in the final round and finished in a tie for 45th, while Becca Horner carded a 6-over and finished in a tie for 53rd. Fátima Fernández Cano rounded out the field for the Trojans in a tie for 128th.
The Trojans head to Augusta, Ga., on March 14-16 from the 3M Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate.
