STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. — Battling cool and windy conditions Sunday at the Eagle's Landing Country Club, the Troy women's golf team shot an opening-round 304 and is tied for second place at the Lady Panther Intercollegiate.
Fátima Fernández Cano, who is tied for fifth place, sank three birdies during her opening round, including one to close out the day on 480-yard, par-5 No. 18. The Trojan freshman also had birdies on No. 3 and No. 12 for her 10th round of the season — out of 20 — at 2-over par or lower as she finished the day with a 2-over 74.
The Trojans are just four shots back of host Georgia State for the team lead and are tied with Campbell in second place. Kennesaw State sits a shot back in fourth and Old Dominion is three shots back in fifth. Georgia's Amira Alexander, who is playing as an individual, shot a 71 to hold the individual lead.
Langley Vannoy had an eventful front nine as she carded a pair of birdies, but also ran into difficulty on No. 1 and No. 9 with a pair of double-bogeys. The junior finished her round strong with seven pars and a birdie on the back nine to sit in a tie for ninth place following a 3-over 75.
Brooks Spinks dropped in a birdie on the par-4 No. 2 and finished her day in a tie for 22nd following a 5-over, while Becca Horner is tied for 27th place after shooting a 6-over. Horner got off to a hot start with a birdie on No. 2 and an eagle on No. 3. Taylor McGraw was 11-over on the day and is tied for 63rd place.
The teams will play 18 more holes on Monday before wrapping up the tournament on Tuesday with the final 18 holes.
