NEW ORLEANS, La. – Troy's Gabriel Sciacca Dias and Trang Huynh swept the Sun Belt Male and Female Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, respectively, on Wednesday.
Dias posted a perfect 3-0 singles record on the week as the Trojans went 2-1 with wins over Alabama State and Bradley, and narrow 4-3 loss to South Alabama.Â
Included in his wins was a three-set, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) win over South Alabama's Manuel Belda at No. 2 singles. Dias' other two singles wins came in straight sets, including a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over Bradley's Hamish Weerasinghe.Â
Dias was also 2-0 in doubles play on the week.
Huynh also posted a perfect 3-0 at No. 1 singles and at No. 1 doubles as she led Troy to three wins on the week, their third, fourth and fifth straight wins. She helped the Trojans defeat Alabama State, Middle Tennessee and Florida A&M.
Huynh dropped just seven games in her six sets of singles play, including a 6-1, 6-2 win over former Sun Belt rival Middle Tennessee to help the Trojans to a 5-2 win over the Blue Raiders.Â
The sophomore dropped just five games in doubles play as she and her partner, Anja Cosovic, ran their current doubles winning streak to 11 matches. Huynh is now 12-4 in singles play this season and 12-2 in doubles play.
The athlete of the week award is the first of Dias' career and the second for Huynh after she won the award earlier this season as well.
Dias and the Troy men return to the court this weekend as they travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for the Middle Tennessee Shootout. Huynh and the Troy women return to the court this weekend as well as they travel to Mobile, Ala., to take on South Alabama on Friday and UL Lafayette on Saturday.
