New York Times Sports Columnist William C. Rhoden to Speak at Troy on Friday

TROY, Ala. — William C. Rhoden, a sports columnist for The New York Times, will discuss ethics and morality in sports on Friday, March 28, at Troy University.
He will speak during the university's annual journalism symposium at 9 a.m. in the ballroom of the Trojan Center, the student center. The public is invited. Admission is free.
Rhoden will be available at 8:30 a.m. at the same location for questions from the media.
His symposium topic will be "Editorial Leadership: The Role of the Media in Influencing Ethics and Morality in Sports." A question-and-answer session will follow. Twitter users can follow the conversation at #RhodenTroy.
Rhoden joined The Times in 1981 and was named sports columnist in 1990. He previously worked at The Baltimore Sun and was an associate editor at Ebony Magazine. As a reporter, he covered high school and college athletics, education and city government.
He won the 1996 Peabody Award for Broadcasting as a writer of the HBO documentary "Journey of the African American Athlete." He has written two books: "Forty Million Dollar Slaves" and "Third and a Mile: The Trials and Triumphs of the Black Quarterback."
He received his B.A. in English and education from Morgan State University.
The Hall School of Journalism and Communication will sponsor the symposium, along with the university's Center for Student Success.
The annual M. Stanton Evans Symposium on Money, Politics and the Media is named for a Troy faculty member who is a national columnist, commentator and book author and is a former editor of the Indianapolis News. Stan Evans has held the university's Buchanan Chair of Journalism since 1980.
