Women's Golf Leads Kiawah Island Classic; Taylor McGraw Tied for Individual Lead

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Paced by a 3-under-par from Taylor McGraw, the Troy women's golf team leads a field of 36 at the Kiawah Island Classic following the opening round of play at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Sunday.
The Trojans shot a 3-over 291 on the day and lead Jacksonville State, Kent State and St. John's by one stroke. The field features six teams ranked in the Golfweek top 100 rankings and five teams in GolfStat's top 100.
Troy opened the 54-hole tournament on the 5,902-yard Oak Point Course and will play the 6,001-yard Cougar Point Course in Monday's second round. The top 19 teams will play for the championship on the Cougar Point course on Tuesday, while the other 17 teams will play a flight championship on the Oak Point course.
McGraw played 1-under on the front nine with birdies on No. 2, No. 3 and No. 8 around a pair of bogeys. The junior from Macon, Ga., finished her round strong as she dropped in birdies on No. 11 and No. 13 to finish with an opening round 69 – the lowest round of her Troy career.
McGraw is tied for the individual lead with Anna Kim from St. John's and Wad Phaewchimplee from Kent State. Sydney Conrad and Brooke Spinks also had solid rounds on Sunday and are tied for 14th following the first day of play.
Conrad had an up and down day for the Trojans, but turned in a quality round as she finished 1-over. Conrad carded four birdies during her opening round, including three on the front nine, but battled a bogey and two double-bogeys.
Spinks sank four birdies over a six-hole period during the middle of her round and sat at 2-under entering the final seven holes of her round. The junior finished 2-under on the four par-5 holes on the course.
Becca Horner ended her round on a strong note with a birdie on No. 18 as she finished her round at 4-over. The freshman opened her round with a birdie on No. 1 and is tied for 50th, while Fátima Fernández Cano sits in a tie for 145th place.
