Troy Baseball Opens SBC Play on the Road Against South Alabama

TROY, Ala. – The Troy University baseball team will travel to Mobile to open Sun Belt Conference play against in-state rival South Alabama in a three-game series set to start on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Stanky Field. The series will continue with a 6:30 p.m. game on Saturday and conclude at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games can be heard on WTBF 94.7 FM or on TroyTrojans.com.

The Trojans (9-7) played Alabama State on Tuesday but the game was suspended with Troy leading 8-5 in the eighth inning due to rain. The game will be resumed on March 19 when the Hornets visit Riddle-Pace Field.

South Alabama (9-7) defeated Southern Miss on Wednesday, 5-1. The Jaguars have won four-straight entering the weekend as the team swept three games from Southern Illinois last week.

Tanner Hicks (1-2, 2.79) will open the series on the mound for Troy. Despite the record, Hicks has turned in three quality starts in four outings and has pitched no fewer than seven innings in each start. He tossed eight innings last time out against New Orleans allowing two earned runs on five hits and striking out a career-high 11 batters in the no decision. South Alabama will counter with RHP Kevin Hill (1-1, 3.50), who has recorded 17 strikeouts in 18 innings this season.

Saturday's matchup will feature a pair of lefties, who are turning in career seasons thus far. Shane McCain (3-1, 1.04) will get the nod for Troy while Locke St. John (2-0, 1.71) will likely be the Jaguars' starter. McCain in one of just 24 pitchers in the NCAA to record four quality starts in his first four starts this year. He has struck out 33 batters in 26 innings and has held opponents to a .172 batting average. St. John has put up stellar numbers as well while working around 11 walks and 25 hits allowed in 26 1/3 innings of work.

Ben Tidwell is slated to make his second start on the mound for the Trojans on Sunday. The junior, in his first career start, pitched 5 2/3 innings against New Orleans last week surrendering two runs on four hits. South Alabama's starter has yet to be determined.

Leading the way offensively for Troy is Trevin Hall, who is riding an eight-game hitting streak. The junior outfielder is best on the club in batting average (.364), home runs (4) and total bases (43). His is tied for the team lead in RBIs with 12.

Garrett Pitts enters the game with a 10-game hitting streak and has reached base in all 16 games this season. Clay Holcomb also has an active streak having reached base in 11 consecutive games.

By the numbers, the Trojans hold a sizable advantage in the power department with 17 home runs, which is tied for second most in the NCAA. South Alabama hit its first and only home run of the season on Sunday. Troy has 28 doubles to the Jaguars 16 and the Trojans have 49 total extra base hits while South Alabama has 20.

As a team, South Alabama is batting .244 with a 3.12 team ERA. The Trojans are hitting at a .254 clip with a 3.08 team ERA.
