MONROE, La. – Persistent defense and a hot shooting night by Hunter Williams helped push Troy (10-18, 5-11 SBC) past ULM (9-15, 6-10 SBC), 61-46, at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Saturday. With the win, the Trojans take over sole possession of eighth in the Sun Belt standings.
"Everybody that played contributed," said head coach Phil Cunningham. "From the starters to the guys off the bench, everybody did their jobs. Everybody contributed in this one tonight."
Williams shot 6-of-10 from beyond the arc on the night, finishing with a game-high 24 points. Tevin Calhoun chipped in with 15 points of his own.
The Trojans defense got out to a hot start, forcing four turnovers in the first four minutes. The Trojans would go on to force 13 turnovers in the first half and take a 20-point lead into the break.
Troy was solid in the second half, maintaining a double-digit lead throughout.
The Trojans shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field and 36.0 percent (9-of-25) from beyond the arc. Troy struggled from the line, hitting 10-of-22 (45.5 %) free throw attempts.
The win puts Troy in sole possession of eighth place in the Sun Belt, after Texas State fell to Georgia State. The Trojans have just two games remaining and are in control of their own destiny.
Troy returns home to take on UT Arlington at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Texas State at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Saturday's game against the Bobcats is also senior day for both the men's and the women's squads.
