TROY, Ala. –Troy (0-1-1) fell to Northwestern State (1-1) , 7-1, on Thursday night in its first game of the 2014 Troy Subway Invitational. The Trojans got down early and couldn't seem to hit the Lady Demons' pitcher, eventually falling by six.

"After you have your big opener last night against Auburn we were fearful that our kids might have a bit of a letdown," said head coach Melanie Davis. "Not taking anything away from Northwestern State, but those mistakes we made in the field dug us in a hole. You can't do that. I think Sara Mock came in and did a great job of not giving up any earned runs to a team that swings the bat pretty well."

The Trojans had four errors on the night, including two that led to a pair of Lady Demons' runs in the second inning. Northwestern State would add two more in the third with a two-run blast by Kellye Kincannon, her second of the day, and add one more in both the fourth and the fifth.

Troy's Sarah Thomas took the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) in 2.1 innings of work. Shelby Sells got the win with a complete game, three hit, 10 strikeout performance.

Sara Mock pitched well in relief for the Trojans, striking out five in 4.2 innings without giving up an earned run.

The Trojans got on the board first with a solo home run by Erica Davis in the bottom of the first inning, the first of her young career.

The Trojans will next take on Kennesaw State at 12 p.m. and Memphis at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Troy Softball Complex.
