Ramirez Named Sun Belt Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – Troy women's basketball sophomore Caitlyn Ramirez was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Ramirez sparked the Trojans to a 76-67 win over Samford in the team's lone game last week. She scored 21 points, including three 3-pointers, off the Troy bench. The 21 points more than doubled her previous season high of 10 points.

The Shawnee, Okla., native was the Trojans' leading scorer as they knocked off a Samford team that was coming off of a win over Penn State, last year's Big 10 champion and an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 team.

Ramirez, who entering the game had scored 17 points in the season's previous five games, shot 8-of-13 from the field and 3-of-5 from long range in the contest.

A 6-foot-2 transfer from Tyler Junior College, Ramirez was ranked as the nation's No. 16 overall junior college prospect (No. 4 power forward) last season by Dan Olsen's Collegiate Girl's Basketball Report.

Ramirez was also named the College Sports Madness Sun Belt Player of the Week, announced on Monday. The honor from the conference office is the first for Ramirez. It's the first for the Trojans since Joanna Harden won the award last season following Troy's January win over UL Lafayette.

Ramirez and Trojans return to the court on Saturday when they host Alabama State at 2 p.m. at Trojan Arena.
