TROY, Alabama – Troy football head coach Neal Brown added a key member to his coaching staff as he announced the hiring of Matt Moore as Troy's co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Thursday. Brown also announced that returning assistant coach Kenny Edenfield would serve with Moore as co-offensive coordinator.
Â
Moore joins the Troy staff after spending the past two seasons as the assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Louisiana Tech.
Â
"Matt has been a winner everywhere he has been and is a great addition to our coaching staff," Brown said. "He was part of our first Sun Belt title here in 2006, and we worked together at Texas Tech where we put up some big offensive numbers. Throughout his career, Matt has had the ability to develop an offensive line and has always had a great demeanor with his players.
Â
"He has won numerous conference titles during his career at Troy, Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech, in addition to a number of state titles at Hoover High School and success as a high school coach in Georgia."
Â
Brown and Moore teamed up in 2010 and 2011 at Texas Tech to produce one of the nation's top offenses. In 2010, Texas Tech finished seventh in passing (318.9), 15th in total offense (460.2) and 23rd in scoring (33.1). The following year the Red Raiders ranked seventh in passing (345.4), 13th in total offense (470.6) and 22nd in scoring (33.8).
Â
"I'm happy to be back in Troy, and I'm looking forward to working under Coach Brown and with this coaching staff," Moore said. "We have a proud tradition here at Troy with this football program and I'm excited to help bring championships back to the Trojan fans."
Â
In 2014, Moore helped lead a drastic improvement at Louisiana Tech during the staff's second year on the job. The Bulldogs won the Conference USA West Division and earned a trip to the Heart of Dallas Bowl after finishing 4-8 the previous season.
Â
Behind Moore's offensive line, running back Kenneth Dixon rushed for 1,236 yards and a league-best 21 touchdowns. The Bulldogs finished second in Conference USA with just 16 sacks allowed (down from 30 the previous season) and third in scoring with 37.5 points per game (up from 19.2 the previous season).
Â
Moore went to Louisiana Tech after spending a year at Middle Tennessee where the Blue Raiders posted an 8-4 record and upset ACC Coastal Division champion Georgia Tech.
Â
The Blue Raider offensive line finished the season second in the nation in fewest sacks allowed while Middle Tennessee was 46th nationally in rushing with three different 100-yard rushers. Middle Tennessee topped the 200-yard rushing mark in five of the team's 12 games while Moore's unit paved the way for true freshman Jordan Parker to set a school freshman rushing record with 851 yards on the year.
Â
A veteran of the high school and collegiate coaching ranks, Moore joined the Blue Raider staff after serving the previous five seasons as offensive line coach at Texas Tech, including two with Brown as the Red Raiders' offensive coordinator.
Â
Moore's offensive lines at Texas Tech led the country in fewest sacks per pass attempt in 2007 and 2008. The Red Raiders allowed a sack once every 54 pass attempts in 2008 behind an offensive line that featured three All-Americans in Rylan Reed, Brandon Carter and Louis Vasquez. His 2007 unit allowed a sack once every 44 attempts.
Â
Texas Tech won the NCAA passing title in 2007 as the Red Raiders averaged 470.3 yards per game through the air, while quarterback Graham Harrell led the nation in passing and won the Sammy Baugh Award as the country's top quarterback.
Â
Behind Moore's offensive line, Texas Tech finished with 28 rushing touchdowns in 2008, which was the second-most in school history. The Red Raiders picked up another NCAA passing title that season as Harrell led an offense that accumulated 413.2 yards per game through the air. Harrell went on to win the Unitas Award and was fourth in Heisman voting at season's end.
Â
Texas Tech averaged over eight wins per season during Moore's tenure and the Red Raiders played in four bowl games. Texas Tech won three of those bowl games – the 2008 Gator Bowl, 2010 Alamo Bowl and the 2011 TicketCity Bowl – with the lone loss coming in the Cotton Bowl during its 11-2 season in 2008.
Â
Moore went to Texas Tech with one year of collegiate coaching experience at Troy in 2006. He helped lead the Trojans to an 8-5 record and a New Orleans Bowl victory over Rice.
Â
Moore's stint on the collegiate level was preceded by successful runs as a coach at the high school level in Georgia and Alabama, where he quickly established himself as a top prep coach. During six seasons as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Hoover (Ala.) High School, Moore helped lead the Buccaneers to three consecutive Class 6A titles and a 77-7 record.
Â
He began his coaching career at Pickens (Ga.) High School in 1996 and spent two seasons there before moving on to Hoover. Moore served as head coach at North Gwinnett (Ga.) High School before joining the staff at Troy.
Â
A native of Canton, Ga., Moore played at Valdosta State, where former Texas Tech and current Washington State head coach Mike Leach was the offensive coordinator. He started 34 games during the 1991-94 seasons at left guard and was a first team All-Gulf South Conference selection as a senior.
Â
Moore received his bachelor's degree from Valdosta State in health and physical education. He is married to the former Kelly Sears of Hickory Flat, Ga., and the couple has three daughters - Tanner, Reece and Sutton.
