TROY, Alabama – Corey Gill (Cottonwood, Alabama) signed his National Letter in Intent on Wednesday to play baseball for Troy University, head coach Bobby Pierce announced. He will join the team in 2016.
Â
"Corey is certainly one of the better all-around athletes we have signed here at Troy over the last number of years," assistant coach Mark Smartt said. "We rarely see a three-sport athlete in today's baseball recruiting process. He has earned all-state recognition in both football and baseball and is a talented basketball player as well."
Â
Gill is a five-year starter at Cottonwood High School in Cottonwood, Alabama as a right-handed pitcher. He earned Dothan Eagle Super 12 honorable mention honors in 2014 and was named Alabama Sports Writers Association honorable mention in 2013. Gill was also a four-year starter at quarterback for the Cottonwood football team and led the Wiregrass area in passing in 2012 and 2013
Â
"We are excited about his decision to attend Troy University and concentrate on baseball," Smartt said. "Cory has shown above average command of his fastball as well as good feel for his breaking ball and change. He is a strike thrower with all three pitches. He offers great poise and confidence while on the mound and his overall ability suggests he will impact our program early in his career."
