Kitchens and Chunn Lead Troy Past Idaho

MOSCOW, Idaho – Montres Kitchens intercepted three passes, one of which he returned for a touchdown, and Jordan Chunn rushed for 189 yards as Troy defeated Idaho, 34-17, on Saturday in the Kibbie Dome.
Â
Kitchens' interceptions tied a school record and remarkably came on three straight possessions in the third quarter. His first two interceptions did not lead to any Troy points, so he took matters into his own hands as he returned his third pick 28 yards for a touchdown. It was the first defensive touchdown of the season for Troy (3-8, 3-4 Sun Belt). Kitchens' second interception was a highlight worthy grab as he leaped back and pulled down the ball with one hand.
Â
Chunn's 189 rushing yards were the most by a Troy player this season and the most of the sophomore's career. He averaged 6.8 yards per carry and gave the Trojans a 17-3 lead midway through the second quarter with his 20th career rushing touchdown; he moved into a tie for seventh all time at Troy with Jeremy Rowell.
Â
Bryan Holmes gave the Trojans the early lead as he hauled in a 41-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Silvers. It marked the sixth time this season that Troy has scored on its opening possession of the game.
Â
Silvers finished 19-of-25 for 235 yards and two touchdowns and didn't throw an interception. That is now eight games this season for the Trojans without an interception thrown, which is the most since the 1996 team that did it 11 times.
Â
Holmes finished with six catches for 111 yards, while Khary Franklin had five catches for 65 yards and rushed for a career-high 68 yards on 15 carries.
Â
Troy and Idaho (1-9, 1-6) traded field goals before Chunn gave the Trojans a 17-3 lead with his touchdown. The Vandals quickly responded with a 64-yard touchdown pass from Matt Linehan to Joshua McCain. Linehan finished the game 14-of-36 for 290 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.
Â
The jubilation on the Idaho sideline was short lived as four plays later Silvers and Holmes hooked up again, this time for 51 yards to put Troy up 24-10. Holmes became the first Troy player to have a pair of touchdown catches over 41 yards since Mykeal Terry had touchdown catches of 54 and 67 yards against Florida Atlantic in 2006.
Â
Idaho's final points of the night came on a 1-yard run by Jerrel Brown with just under four minutes to play in the first half. The Trojans held Idaho to just 120 yards of total offense in the second half and outgained the Vandals 524-386 for the game.
Â
Ryan Kay capped Troy's scoring with a 20-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter after kicking a 40-yarder earlier in the game.Â
Â
The Trojans will take next week off before hosting UL Lafayette on November 29 in the season finale. The game will be the final one for legendary Troy head coach Larry Blakeney, who announced his retirement earlier this year.
