Troy Falls to UL Lafayette in Blakeney’s Finale

TROY, Alabama – The Troy football team couldn't hold on to a halftime lead as UL Lafayette scored 21 unanswered points in a 42-23 win over the Trojans at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Larry Blakeney's final game as head coach.
The Trojans (3-9, 3-5 Sun Belt) played inspired football in the first half, trying to send out the 45-year coaching veteran with a win, but the Ragin' Cajuns (8-4, 7-1) scored three of their six rushing touchdowns in the second half while holding Troy scoreless.
Brandon Silvers went 29-of-34 on the day for Troy with 272 yards and three touchdowns. The redshirt freshman finished the season with a 70.5 completion percentage, breaking the NCAA freshman record previously held by Oklahoma's Sam Bradford who completed 69.5 percent in 2007.
Trailing 7-0, Troy failed to convert on a fourth-and-1 at the ULL 2-yard line, but the Cajuns quickly gave the momentum back. ULL quarterback Terrance Broadway couldn't handle a low snap and was ruled down in the end zone, giving Troy a safety to cut the lead to 7-2.
It took the Trojans just 1:54 to score on their ensuing possession when Silvers found Bryan Holmes for a 28-yard touchdown pass. That was the first of five lead changes in the first half.
The Ragin' Cajuns retook the lead on the first of three Alonzo Harris touchdown runs, this one from two yards out with 5:34 to go in the first half. The last five-plus minutes were eventful, starting with Chandler Worthy's 55-yard kickoff return to set up the next Troy score, a 17-yard touchdown pass from Silvers to Teddy Ruben.
Elijah McGuire responded for the Cajuns, with a 75-yard touchdown run, accounting for nearly half of his 169 rushing yards on the day. The one-play drive gave UL Lafayette a 21-16 lead with 2:49 to go before the half.
That left Silvers enough time to orchestrate another go-ahead drive, this one ending in a 5-yard touchdown pass to B.J. Chitty, who was one of 20 seniors playing in their final game for Troy. Ryan Kay's extra point gave Troy a 23-21 lead going into the break.
However, the second half belonged entirely to the Cajuns as they used drives of 5:00, 6:25 and 6:36 to milk the clock and keep the Troy offense on the bench. The Cajuns ran the ball on 32 of their 40 second-half plays, including on eight of the 10 plays in the opening drive as they marched 74 yards. Harris capped that drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to give ULL a 28-23.
UL Lafayette added touchdown runs from Broadway and Harris in the second half while the Trojans got just 52 yards of total offense after gaining 342 in the first half.
