South Alabama Knocks Off Troy
10/24/2014 11:03:00 PM | Football
Â
South Alabama (5-2, 4-1 Sun Belt) rushed for 296 yards as a team led by a pair of 100-yard performances from Kendall Houston (178 yards) and Xavier Johnson (107 yards).
Â
Troy (1-7, 1-3) had the momentum in its favor after halftime as the defense held the Jaguars to a three-and-out thanks in part to a 9-yard tackle for loss by Femi Odaibo on third down. On the ensuing punt, Mobile native Drew Thompson burst straight through the South Alabama line and blocked the punt.
Â
The Trojans were unable to move the ball on the drive and Ryan Kay's 38-yard field goal was true to pull Troy within four, 10-6.
Â
South Alabama quickly got the momentum back on its side as the Jaguars, aided by a pair of penalties, took a 17-6 lead on a 14-yard touchdown run by Johnson. A three-and-out by the Troy offense and a 41-yard touchdown run by Houston gave South Alabama a 24-6 lead with 5:09 to play in the third quarter.
Â
Both teams struggled to get anything going through the air as South Alabama's Brandon Bridge completed just 9-of-21 attempts for 106 yards, while two Troy quarterbacks combined to complete 13-of-24 attempts for 145 yards.
Â
Jordan Chunn rushed for a season-high 53 yards on just eight carries (6.6 yards per carry) to lead Troy's running game, while Brandon Burks added 50 yards on 14 carries. Teddy Ruben had three catches for 65 yards and Bryan Holmes had three catches for 65 yards.
Â
South Alabama scored on its first two possessions of the game to jump out to the early lead. Aleem Sunanon hit a 38-yard field goal for the game's first points and Shavarez Smith pulled down a 45-yard pass from Bridge for a score.
Â
Kay capped a 10-play, 60-yard drive with a 43-yard field goal to put the Trojans on the board with 5:48 to play in the opening half. Troy had a prime opportunity to get points before halftime, but had the clock run out on it with the ball on the South Alabama 22-yard line.
Â
Dontreal Pruitt took over at quarterback for the Trojans in the fourth quarter and led the Trojans on its lone touchdown drive of the game. He capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to B.J. Chitty with a minute to play in the game.
Â
The Trojans will play another nationally televised game next week when they travel to Statesboro, Ga., to take on Georgia Southern on Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
