WEST POINT, Mississippi – The Troy women's golf team continues to rewrite its record book as the Trojans shot the low round of the day at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational and finished with a school record 891 for the tournament.
The Trojans shot a 7-over 295 in Wednesday's final round to lead 13-team field, including host and second-ranked Mississippi State. Taylor McGraw led Troy in the final round with an even par, while Fátima Fernández Cano shot a 1-over, Becca Horner carded a 2-over and Langley Vannoy finished 4-over.
"We've faced a great schedule and I don't think these young ladies are fazed in these type of situations," head coach Bart Barnes said. "They are all very goal orientated individuals and they enjoy the challenge. We are playing with a lot of confidence right now and that coupled with all of their hard work in practice is really showing up on the course."
Troy finished the tournament tied with FIU for fifth place after entering the day 10 shots back of their former conference rival. Mississippi State won the event by 24 shots over South Florida, who was followed by Houston, Memphis and then Troy and FIU. The Trojans bested in-state foe Samford by 14 shots and Sun Belt rival South Alabama by 31 shots.
Horner had by far the best tournament of her career as she shot a career-low 219 to finish in a tie for ninth place. She had 16 pars on the day and led the tournament with 40 pars over the course of the three rounds.
Cano and Vannoy tied for 16th place overall as they both finished 7-over for the event. Cano thrived on the par 5s as she finished a tournament best 5-under on the week on those holes. Cano had three birdies on the day while Vannoy had one.
McGraw's round of even par was tied for the third best of the day behind individual champion Ally McDonald's (Mississippi State) 71 and Erin Selfridge's (South Florida) 69. McGraw birdied the par 5 No. 2 and par 3 No. 12 as she finished with seven birdies for the tournament.
"We had much cleaner play in the final two rounds and I'm really pleased with that," Barnes said. "Sometimes when it's a little out of reach to win the tournament you can always win the day and take that as a confidence builder. We ended the fall on a high note and we need to take that into the spring."
Sydney Conrad wrapped up the tournament tied for 58th place following an 81 on Tuesday while Brooke Spinks tied for 68th competing as an individual.
The Trojans are done for the fall and will be back in action on February 13-15, 2015, at the site of the 2014 NCAA East Regional when they play in the Florida State Match-Up at the Southwood Golf Course.
