Women’s Golf in Eighth Following Opening Round of Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational

WEST POINT, Mississippi – Led by a pair of solid rounds from Langley Vannoy and Becca Horner, the Troy women's golf team is in eighth place following the first of three rounds at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational held Monday at the Old Waverly Golf Club.
The Trojans shot a 302 as a team thanks to their solid play on the par 5s where they shot 4-under on the day, the second best tally in the field. No. 2 Mississippi State leads the tournament by five shots over South Florida, while the Bulldogs' Chieh Jessica Peng shot a 4-under 68 to grab the individual lead.
Troy opened on the back nine and Vannoy birdied No. 12 to go 1-under where she stayed until a triple-bogey on No 18. She quickly got the stroke back as she birdied No. 1, No. 6 and No. 9 around a pair of bogeys to finish her day at 1-over 73.
Horner made the turn at 1-under after birdies on No. 10, No. 15 and No. 17 around a double-bogey on No. 16. The Trojan sophomore, who finished 1-over for the round, made a pair of bogeys on two of her final three holes after six straight pars after making the turn.
Vannoy and Horner are tied for 14th place while Fátima Fernández Cano is tied for 36th place after shooting a 5-over 77. Cano made the turn at 2-over thanks to a birdie on No. 5 and shot 3-over on the front nine.
Taylor McGraw carded a pair of birdies – one on each side of the course – and shot a 7-over 79 in the opening round to finish the day tied for 50th. Competing as an individual, Brooke Spinks is tied with McGraw for 50th place, while Sydney Conrad shot an 81 and is tied for 61st place.
Troy will hit the course on the back nine beginning at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday along with Iowa and South Alabama.
