NEW ORLEANS – Defending Sun Belt Conference individual champion Fátima Fernández Cano didn't miss a beat over her first two tournaments and was named the Sun Belt Women's Golfer of the Month for September, the league office announced Thursday.
The Troy sophomore won the Chris Banister Golf Classic this past week after shooting a 1-over 217, including the only sub-par round among the field of 67 golfers with her 2-under 70 in the second round. Cano's performance helped lead the Trojans to the team title; it was both Cano's and Troy's second victory over the past four tournaments.
Cano's 145 over the opening 36 holes at the Chris Banister Golf Classic is tied for the third lowest in school history, while her 217 ranks as the second-lowest mark in school history.
Cano, a native of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, finished the month with a 73.83 stroke average over six rounds. She opened the season with a 20th-place finish at The "Mo"morial hosted by Texas A&M; Cano was one of just seven golfers in the top 25 from a non-Power 5 conference.
Troy has counted all six of her rounds this season towards the team score and the Trojans have defeated Sun Belt competition by a combined 89 strokes through the first two events this year.
