TROY, Alabama – Appalachian State scored 24 unanswered points in the first half en route to a 53-14 victory over Troy Saturday in Sun Belt Conference action at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
Â
Troy (1-6, 1-2 Sun Belt) came out on its first drive and converted a fourth down at the Appalachian State 25-yard line to keep the drive alive. After a pair of Mountaineer penalties moved the chains, Brandon Burks rushed for a 5-yard touchdown to give Troy a 7-0 lead.
Â
Appalachian State (2-5, 1-2) responded a mere 19 seconds later with a 59-yard pass from Taylor Lamb to Malachi Jones to tie the game.
Â
On the next drive, Troy went three and out. App State took over and moved the chains. Troy safety JaQuadrian Lewis forced a fumble but the Mountaineers recovered and were forced to kick a 37-yard field goal, to a 10-7 lead, which they held on to for the remainder of the contest.
Â
With 2:08 left in the first quarter, Appalachian State's Will Walker forced a Brandon Silvers' fumble and Olawale Dada returned it 20 yards for a touchdown, extending the Mountaineers lead to 17-7. Early in the second quarter, Marcus Cox stretched the Mountaineers lead to 24-7 on a 2-yard run that capped an 84-yard drive.
Â
Chandler Worthy refused to give up, as he took the ensuing kickoff to the house. The 99-yard kickoff return was the second kick return touchdown of the season for Worthy, cutting into the Mountaineers lead, 24-14. This marked the first time in Troy's Division I era (1993-present) that any player has kickoff return touchdowns in back-to-back games.Â
Â
With one second remaining in the first half, Lewis forced his second fumble of the game on the Troy 1-yard line. Mark Wilson recovered the ball, but momentum caused him to step into the end zone where he was tackled, resulting in a safety to extend Appalachian State's lead, 26-14.
Â
In the second half, the Trojans were unable to find their groove. Troy had three of its four turnovers in the second half and Appalachian State took advantage as it extended its lead with four rushing touchdowns. Troy had no rebuttal.
Â
Silvers finished the game for Troy 20-of-30 for 156 yards. Dontreal Pruitt saw his first action since Georgia and he finished 7-of-10 for 73 yards. Worthy ended the game with 168 all-purpose yards and a touchdown. Lewis led the Troy defense as he tallied 10 tackles, including two tackles for loss and his two forced fumbles.
Â
The Mountaineers rushed for 437 yards on the day and had 547 yards of total offense. Marcus Cox and Ricky Ferguson each rushed for over 100 yards. Lamb finished 9-of-16 for 110 yards and one touchdown in the air.
Â
The Trojans hit the road as they travel to in-state Sun Belt rival South Alabama for a Friday night match up on October 24. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on ESPNU.
