Troy Volleyball Falls in Five Sets at Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Troy volleyball team took a 2-1 lead on the road, but Arkansas State won the final two sets to take a five-set victory, 3-2 (25-17, 29-31, 20-25, 25-20, 15-13), on Sunday afternoon.
Troy (5-11, 0-2) is now 1-4 in five-set matches on the season while Arkansas State (6-11, 2-0) opens Sun Belt play with two five-set wins after knocking Georgia State at home on Friday.
The Trojans were led by Blair Winston who posted 20 kills and just four errors to hit .302. True freshman Cassie Hendricks had the best match of her young career, posting 15 kills and five attack errors on 25 swings for a .400 attack percentage.
Troy hit .212 as a team, but posted a -.043 attack percentage in the final set as Arkansas State rallied to take the match. With Troy leading the final set 12-10, the Red Wolves scored five of six thanks to four Troy errors to take a 15-13 win in the deciding set.
Courtney Cohen led all players with 23 digs, marking the 26th time in her career she's gone over 20 digs. Kelley Curran was also in double figures with 13 digs while Alexandra Alexander posted a double-double with 48 assists and 11 digs.
Arkansas State recorded 12.0 total team blocks, including four in the fifth set, while Troy posted just 5.0 team blocks in the match. The Red Wolves hit .220 as a team, led by Sarah Kemp's 15 kills and .279 attack percentage.
After a first-set loss, Troy hit .391 and .320 in the second and third set, respectively, to take a 2-1 lead. The second set was incredibly close with 18 ties as Troy went on to take it 31-29, ahead of a 25-20 win in the third set.
Troy outhit Arkansas State in the fourth set, but the Red Wolves went on to take the frame, 25-20, to set up a deciding fifth set.
The Trojans return to the floor on Wednesday when they travel to take on South Alabama at 7 p.m.
