TROY, Ala. – A mix of youth and experience will hit the links for the Troy women's golf team in the season-opening ULM Fred Marx Invitational at the Bayou DeSiard Country Club in Monroe, La., on Monday and Tuesday.
The 54-hole tournament on the par-72, 6,114-yard course will feature 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. Troy has won two of the past three team titles at the Fred Marx Invitational and junior Langley Vannoy tied for first as a freshman two years ago.
"We've had a very good three weeks, almost a month, of practice," head coach Bart Barnes said. "I'm pleased with the attitude and effort the last couple of weeks in practice. This is an event where we've had some success in the past and hopefully we can continue to build on that."
Three juniors and a pair of freshmen will make up Troy's lineup in Barnes' debut as the women's head coach. Vannoy, Taylor McGraw and Brooke Spinks all make their return for the Trojans, while Fátima Fernández Cano and Becca Horner will make their collegiate debuts.
Joining Troy in the field will be ULM, Sam Houston State, South Alabama, Houston Baptist, Stephen F. Austin, Jackson State, McLennan CC, Lamar, McNeese State, New Orleans, Oklahoma City and the University of the Incarnate Word.
The Trojans are coming off their best-ever finish at the Sun Belt Championship after turning in a fourth place finish last season. Vannoy led Troy with a 12th-place finish while Spinks also turned in a solid performance.
Vannoy, a native of Pensacola, Fla., finished second on the team last season with a 77.41 stroke average and fired a low round of 71 at the Golfweek Program Challenge. Spinks played in seven on Troy's tournament last season and the Tifton, Ga., native finished with a 78.84 stroke average.
McGraw turned in of the top individual performances by a Trojan last season as she finished tied for second at the Jacksonville Courtyard Classic. The Macon, Ga., native carded a 3-over-par 219 for the tournament and finished the year with a 78.86 stroke average.
