Troy Tennis Fairs Well on Opening Day at Big Easy

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Both the Troy men's and women's tennis teams started their seasons off on the right foot at the Big Easy Tennis Classic on Friday. The two teams combined to post a 9-1 record in singles and doubles play on the opening day of the three-day tournament.
In men's doubles, Sami Ghorbel and Mansingh Athare advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-3 win over a qpair from Jackson State.
In the first flight of men's singles play, both Ghorbel and Daniel Bustamante posted wins for the Trojans. Ghorbel, after a bye moved him into the quarterfinals, advanced into the semifinals with a win over Garcia Onrube of Alabama State. Bustamante also defeated a Hornet, knocking off Adam Coyne, 6-4, 6-3, to move to the quarterfinals.
In the second flight, Athare advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 win over Michael Binder of New Orleans.
In women's doubles action, the Trojans posted a perfect performance as three pairs have moved into the round of 16. Shaozhou Liu and Margot De Hann received a bye into the round of 16. Anja Cosovic and Monica Gonzalez defeated a duo from Loyola (N.O.), 8-1. Hannah Toro and Lyubov Dorofeeva defeated a pair from NOVA Southeastern, 8-1.
In the first flight of women's singles play, Liu moved to the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kathrin Waider of Southern Miss. Dorofeeva also moved into the quarterfinals in the first flight with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Petra Harakova of ULM.
In the second flight, Cosovic moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Julie Angermann of Jackson State. De Haan also played in the second flight but moved into the consolation round with a loss to ULM's Sophie Rufyikiri.
In the third flight, Brooke Durden advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 win over Linda Komienko of NOVA Southeastern.
