TROY, Ala. – The Troy University baseball team will finish the season ranked for the first time in school history following a 42-20 season and a trip to the Tallahassee Regional final. Additionally, Tyler Vaughn has been named one of 14 finalists for the Brooks Wallace Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top shortstop.
Collegiate Baseball has the Trojans ranked as the No. 23 team in the nation this week, up from No. 26, following a 2-2 showing in the Tallahassee Regional. Troy defeated in-state rival Alabama twice during the Regional, including a dramatic 9-8 victory in the second meeting; both losses came at the hands of No. 7 Florida State. The Trojans scored four times in the ninth inning to rally from down 8-5 in their second meeting with the Crimson Tide to advance to their second-ever NCAA Regional final.
Vaughn was a first team All-Sun Belt selection at shortstop for the Trojans and finished his junior campaign batting at a .327 clip with 20 doubles, a triple, 26 RBIs and a .401 on-base percentage. The Murphy, N.C., native committed just five errors all season long and finished the year with a .982 fielding percentage.
Vaughn, who started all 62 of Troy's games, was named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team last week and ranks second in the NCAA with 72 runs scored. Troy's leadoff hitter led the club with 26 multi-hit games and is currently the second toughest player in the country to strikeout. Vaughn struck out just 10 times in 257 at-bats this past season.
The Brooks Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, will be presented during the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas.
