TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Brandon Brown drew a bases-loaded, walk-off walk in the ninth to cap a four-run inning as Troy defeated Alabama 9-8 in an elimination game at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional on Sunday.
No. 26 Troy (42-19) moves on to face No.9 Florida State on Sunday at 4 p.m. (CDT) in the Tallahassee Regional Championship at Dick Howser Stadium. The Trojans (42-19) will have to defeat the Seminoles (46-15) twice to advance to next week's Super Regional.
“That was a great example of who we are and what we've been all year,” Troy assistant coach Mark Smartt said. “To get four in the ninth in this environment was a special thing. I couldn't be prouder of all our players and it took everybody. We had pitchers running. We had guys getting big hits. I give Brandon Brown a lot of credit for taking the walk. That's hard to do but it showed a lot of spirit, a lot of character, a lot of heart. The words 'all in' really do mean that and I couldn't be prouder of our team.”
Tyler Vaughn was a hit by pitch to open the inning and moved to second when Danny Collins walked with one out.
“It's just one of those things you can't explain,” Logan Pierce said. “I told (Tyler Vaughn) in the top of the ninth that I'd seen crazier things. That's what happened something crazy. That's what it takes in the postseason and it's just a great thing that everyone stepped up and did.”
Kyle Brown dumped a double down the line in left field to score both runners and pull Troy within one, 8-7. Brown took over defensively in the top of the ninth inning after Cass Abercrombie pinch ran for Trae Santos in the eighth; it was Brown's first hit and just his sixth at-bat since March 18.
“I was just trying to get a good pitch to hit,” Kyle Brown said. “I got down two strikes in the count, thought I might see a fastball and just had to battle with two strikes and get a ball I could hit.”
Matthew Howard drove home pinch runner Tanner Hicks to tie the game at 8-8 after Josh McDorman drew a walk. Ray Castillo then hit Jakob Nixon with a pitch to load the bases with just one out.
Brandon Brown, who delivered an RBI single in the eighth after coming off the bench, worked a 3-1 count and then walked-off the victory as Castillo issued his third free pass of the inning.
After Alabama (35-28) built an 8-4 lead with three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth, Santos and Howard drew walks around McDorman being hit by a pitch. Brown drove a single through the left side of the infield to pull Troy within three, 8-5.
Jeremy McGowan (2-0) picked up the win for Troy after he threw 1.1 perfect innings out of the bullpen, including a shutdown ninth inning.
Ryan Sorce gave Troy a good start, allowing four runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings or work. He left with Troy trailing the game 4-1, but a three-run sixth inning by the Trojans tied things up at 4-4.
Alabama's Spencer Turnbull held Troy to just one run through the first five innings, but the Trojans knocked out the Crimson Tide starter out of the game with a three-run sixth.
Vaughn reached on an error, Logan Pierce singled and Santos walked to load the bases for Troy. McDorman delivered his second and third RBIs of the game with a double and Howard hit a sacrifice fly to tie things at 4-4.
McDorman put Troy on the board in the fourth with a single back up the middle after Pierce singled and moved to second on a Collins sac bunt. McDorman finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Pierce also posted two hits for Troy who was outhit by Alabama 15-8.
The win was the second for Troy over Alabama on the weekend as the Trojans defeated the Crimson Tide, 5-2, in the tournament's first game on Friday afternoon.
Castillo (2-3) took the loss for Alabama as he gave up all four runs in the ninth on two hits, three walks and two hit batters.
