TROY, Ala. – Three Troy Softball players have been selected to the All-Sun Belt Conference team, the league announced Tuesday at the Sun Belt Softball Tournament Family Night at the Troy Softball Complex.
The Trojans grabbed one first team selection and two second team selections as Troy prepares to open the Sun Belt Conference Tournament against South Alabama at 5:30 p.m.
Junior Kacie McAllister was named to the first team as the utility/designated player while senior catcher Hannah Renn and senior first baseman Caitlin Ortiz earned second team honors.
During 2013, McAllister has started all 50 games during her junior season, making starts at four different positions (catcher, first base, left field and right field) and posting a career-best .326 batting average, with two home runs, eight doubles and 25 RBIs. The junior's 13 sacrifice bunts lead the Sun Belt Conference and has recorded three sacrifice flies which is tied for fifth in the league. Against conference opponents, McAllister has picked up 16 of her 25 RBIs against conference opponents in 21 games.
A true utility player, McAllister played multiple positions during Troy's season and posted a .985 fielding percentage which was the second best mark on the team in 2013. The speedy junior also recorded a career-high nine stolen bases.
One of the most versatile catchers in the Sun Belt, Renn leads the Trojans and all Sun Belt catchers in runs scored with 35 while the senior's .299 batting average is second among Sun Belt catchers. During her final season at Troy, Renn recorded a career-high 10 home runs and 32 RBIs in 45 starts.
The Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., finished inside the top 10 in the league in slugging percentage (.590), doubles (10), and three other categories. Renn's 10 homers are tied for the fifth most in single-season history and the senior's 17 career home runs are currently tied for seventh in school history.
Ortiz is having a career year during her senior campaign, hitting a team high .352, a mark that ranks ninth in the Sun Belt. She is tied for the league lead in doubles with 13 and her .500 on-base percentage ranks third in the conference.
Entering the Sun Belt Tournament, Ortiz has reached base in 26 consecutive games, a season-high, and her 23 walks and 13 hit-by-pitches lead the Trojans. The senior's .500 on-base percentage is on pace to break the Troy single-season record set by Jill Buckley in 1994.
The Trojans now turn their attention to the Sun Belt Conference Championships and face No.18 South Alabama Wednesday night at the Troy Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. Troy lost its only meeting against the Jaguars on April 24, losing 9-0 in Mobile.
