LAFAYETTE, La. – Seth Harrison hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to lift Louisiana-Lafayette past Troy 9-2 Saturday evening at “Tigue” Moore Field; the Cajuns clinched the Sun Belt Conference series with the victory.
Louisiana-Lafayette (22-8, 6-5 Sun Belt), who won its 11th straight home game, jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first and a solo homer by Harrison to leadoff the second.
Logan Pierce pulled Troy (20-9, 6-5) within one, 3-2, with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the third. Ali Knowles singled with one out and Tyler Vaughn followed with a two-out single before Pierce's 12th double of the season.
Troy starter Will Starling had settled into a groove on the mound as he had retired seven straight ULL batters after a grounder and a strikeout to open the fifth. Caleb Adams broke Starling's run of batters set down with a double to right-center field and then Starling hit a batter and walked another to load the bases for Harrison, who took a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left center to give ULL a 7-2 lead.
Austin Robicheaux held the Trojans without a hit from Pierce's double in the third until an infield single by Danny Collins in the eighth. Robicheaux (4-2) threw 125 pitches in the game and struck out eight batters over his compete game outing.
ULL added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Harrison and one in the eighth on a single by Ryan Leonards.
Starling (4-3) took the loss for the Trojans after he was charged with seven runs on seven hits over five innings; he struck out five and walked three.
Troy will send Shane McCain (5-0, 3.46) to the mound on Sunday at 1 p.m. as the Trojans will look to salvage a game in the series.
