TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team wraps up the road portion of its Sun Belt Conference schedule this weekend and travels to No. 22 Louisiana-Lafayette for a three-game conference series at Lamson Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. for Saturday's doubleheader; the series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Troy (20-27, 7-11 Sun Belt) enters the series after falling on the road at No. 18 South Alabama 9-0 on Wednesday night. The Trojans are 3-6 in Sun Belt play in 2013, but four of Troy's six losses have come by three runs or less.
This weekend, the Trojans will face the top offensive team in the Sun Belt as Louisiana-Lafayette (34-11, 13-4) leads the conference in batting average (.329), runs per game (7.0) and home runs (66). The Ragin' Cajuns also boasts one of the top pitchers in the league in Preseason Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year Jordan Wallace (20-6, 1.79 ERA).
The eighth-ranked Ragin' Cajuns heads into the weekend series with a 16-game winning streak, the longest active winning streak by a team in the Sun Belt Conference. Last season, Troy knocked off then No. 8 Louisiana-Lafayette at the Troy Softball Complex handing the Ragin Cajuns' their first loss of the season a year ago. The win marked one of Troy's three wins of Top-25 opponents last season.
In Sun Belt play this season, Michaela Hamiton has picked four of Troy's sevens win in Sun Belt action while the senior has posted a 2.19 ERA in seven appearances. Rachel Rigney has recorded two saves in conference play and leads Troy with 13 appearances.
Caitlin Ortiz has reached base in 23 straight games, the longest streak by a Trojan this season and is just one game shy of Nikki Hollett's 24-game streak in 2011. Ortiz also leads the club with a .500 on-base percentage and is still on pace to break Troy's single-season record that was set by Jill Buckley in 1994. Kacie McAllister leads Troy at the plate in conference play with a .373 batting average and 16 RBIs. Hannah Renn's nine home runs this season leads the Trojans and currently is tied for sixth in single-season history for home runs, while the senior's .583 slugging percentage sits tied for eighth in school history.
