TROY, Ala. – Just a week after capping off her successful collegiate golf career, senior Sofia Bjorkman was named to the 2012-13 Women's Golf All-Sun Belt Conference Team, the league office announced on Thursday.
Bjorkman becomes the first Troy women's golfer to be named to the All-Conference team since the Trojans joined the Sun Belt. This marks the second award for Bjorkman in the spring as she picked up Sun Belt Golfer of the Month honors for March, the first Troy golfer to do so since March of 2011.
“I'm very honored to receive this award, and I have my team and coaches to thank for my success,” Bjorkman said. “It's been a great four years for me here in Troy and I'm so happy to close my college golf career with this honor.”
The Vanersborg, Sweden, native finishes her collegiate golf career with a 76.6 career stroke average, a mark that she has improved since she joined the program in the fall of 2009. Bjorkman finished with stroke averages of 78.16, 77.39 and 76.06 in her first three years, respectively, and improved that number to a 74.96 in 2012-13 to rank her fourth-best in the conference.
“Every year I have seen my score get lower and I have started to trust my game where I felt very comfortable on the golf course. Hard practice with my team and a lot of help from coach Matt Terry and Bart Barnes has helped me develop both as a player and as a person.”
Bjorkman finishes her career with just one career tournament win, but finished the 2012-13 season in the top-20 of all 10 of Troy's tournaments. She carded her season-best finishes of fourth three times (JU Courtyard Classic, Golfweek Program Challenge, Lady Eagle Invitational) and finished no lower than 20th all season. The departing senior finished as Troy's lowest player in eight of the 10 tournaments with an average finish of 9.5.
“I'm so thankful for the opportunity to play college golf at Troy and I will truly miss my teammates and the relationship that I have established with them.”
