NEW ORLEANS – Troy swept the Sun Belt Conference weekly baseball honors as Danny Collins was named Player of the Week and Tanner Hicks was tabbed Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Collins and Hicks helped lead the Trojans to a perfect 5-0 week with a pair of mid-week victories over Alabama A&M and a sweep of UALR in Sun Belt play over the weekend. Troy sits 29-11 on the season and 11-7 in the Sun Belt; the Trojans enter the week tied for second in the league and are just a game out of first place.
Collins, a junior from Niceville, Fla., hit seven doubles in Troy's five games last week to go along with a .455 batting average, eight runs scored, a home run, seven RBIs, a .909 slugging percentage, a .500 on-base percentage and a 1.409 OPS. Troy's right fielder struck out just one time in 24 plate appearances and had multiple hits in four of the five games.
Collins now has 21 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 55 RBIs and a 1.234 OPS this season. His 21 doubles already rank as the sixth most in a season in Troy history and he is on pace for 76 RBIs (in 55 regular season games); that RBI total would establish a new Troy school record.
Hicks matched up against Preseason Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year Chance Cleveland in the series opener and Troy's junior right-hander outdueled his counterpart. Hicks tossed a complete-game, four-hitter as Troy won the opener 2-1.
The Millbrook, Ala., native improved to 5-2 on the season as he struck out a career best nine batters. Hicks did not allow a base runner in five of his nine innings of work and held UALR without a hit in seven different innings. Over his last two starts, Hicks has not allowed a run in 15 of 17 innings pitched.
Troy will look to extend its 12-game home win streak on Tuesday night when Samford visits Riddle-Pace Field; first pitch is set for 6 p.m. The Trojans defeated the Bulldogs 15-4 back on April 10 in Birmingham. Senior right-hander Joe Hernandez (1-0, 4.91) will start on the mound for the Troy while Samford will counter with junior left-hander Eric Wright (3-2, 4.59).
